1 Timothy 4, My Hearers

It’s funny how we all want something to follow. Something to lead us so we don’t go astray from what we feel to be right. And it’s funny how this very thing is what can lead us astray.

1 Timothy 4:1 says, Now the Spirit expressly says that in later times some will depart from the faith by devoting themselves to deceitful spirits and teachings of demons.

That’s a scary thought! Deceitful spirits and demons leading us.

1 Timothy 4 goes on to say in verses 7-8, Have nothing to do with irreverent, silly myths. Rather train yourself for godliness; for while bodily training is of some value, godliness is of value in every way, as it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come.

This is very comforting for me right now especially as I sit here with my broken foot and can’t do my normal bodily training. BUT I can carry on training myself for godliness! I can read the Bible! I can pray! I can sit here with my ice packs and talk to God, preparing myself for when those deceitful spirits and demons try to approach me. And Halloween is just around the corner. Demons and spirits are always out, but I bet more so at Halloween!? Or maybe it’s just easier to get caught up with them during that time.

1 Timothy 4 ends with instructions in verse 16, Keep a close watch on yourself and on the teaching. Persist in this, for by so doing you will save both yourself and your hearers.

I thought, “Who are my hearers? Do I have hearers, God?”

But I knew immediately who mine were! We all have someone who hears us! Maybe not our spouses, or our grown kids. But what about friends, coworkers, neighbors, and especially grandchildren, if you are blessed with those already! Those are my hearers, my grandchildren! And I’m with them at such different times doing different things, even with my broken foot. So, I need to be ready, and well trained, because they are listening and hearing almost everything I say. And I want no part of sharing deceitful spirits and demons with them! Only God and His Spirit!
